About the artist
Born in the Dominican Republic and raised in New York City, Madeline Díaz is a painter based in Paris. She explores identity, belonging, migration, place and postcolonial legacies using a variety of genres and mediums – from landscape to still life and oil pastel to oil paint. Díaz received a diploma in illustration from the High School of Fashion Industries in 1998. She holds a BA in art history from Brown University and an MA in museum studies from Columbia University. She has studied with Cuban-American artist José Pascual Hijuelos and French artist Patrick Laurin.
Through her work, Díaz seeks to acknowledge the lasting impact of the European old masters on her artistic development, while searching for and creating space for her own voice and complex cultural identity.
In addition to her work as an artist, Díaz has over 20 years of experience designing and leading programs for museums and cultural institutions in the US and France including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Frick Collection, the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum and the National Museum of the American Latino, the Grand Palais and the Maison Européenne de la Photographie. She frequently teaches museum education at the University of Versailles. She divides her time between France, Spain and the US.
